Overview & Course Duration
In Germany, the medical degree is not called MBBS; it is a unified state examination program known as Staatsexamen. The structure is rigorously divided into theoretical, clinical, and practical phases.
Total Duration: 6 Years & 3 Months (excluding language/foundation years)
1. Pre-Clinical Phase (2 Years)
Focuses on basic sciences (Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, etc.). Ends with the 1st State Examination (Physikum).
2. Clinical Phase (3 Years)
Core clinical subjects like surgery, internal medicine, and pediatrics, heavily involving hospital rotations and lectures.
3. Practical Year (Praktisches Jahr / PJ) (1 Year)
Full-time, intense hospital placement split into three 4-month blocks. Concludes with the final 2nd State Examination to earn your license (Approbation).

Eligibility Criteria (Highly Competitive)
Germany is incredibly competitive. Usually, only students with grades equivalent to a perfect 1.0 - 1.5 in the German grading system (approx. 90-95%+ in Indian 12th standard) stand a chance at public university admission.
- 📚 Academics Abitur Equivalence / Studienkolleg: Since the Indian 12th certificate is not a direct equivalent to the German Abitur, Indian students must first pass an entrance exam (Aufnahmeprüfung) to enter a 1-year Medical Foundation Course (M-Kurs Studienkolleg), followed by the final Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) exam.
- 🗣️ Language German Proficiency (C1 Level): Mandatory proof of highly advanced German language skills (TestDaF level 4, DSH-2, or Goethe C1). You cannot study medicine in Germany without fluency in German.
- 📝 Exams NEET-UG & APS: A valid NEET scorecard is mandatory for Indians. Further, an APS Certificate (Academic Evaluation Centre) verifying your Indian documents is an absolute strict requirement for the German Student Visa.
